Conscious Sobriety and Sober October to Reset + Be Well
Have you intentionally started drinking less alcohol?
According to a recent Gallup survey, the U.S. drinking rate is at an all-time low. 54% of U.S. adults say they drink alcohol, down from peaks of 71% in the late 1970s according to the Gallup data.
For the first time in Gallup’s trend, a majority of Americans, 53%, say drinking in moderation, or “one or two drinks a day,” is bad for one’s health.
Americans are currently undergoing a significant transformation in their relationship with alcohol as more individuals seek to reclaim their physical and mental vitality through conscious sobriety or sober breaks.
This shift is reflective of a larger movement in which people recognize that alcohol can often negatively impact mood, energy, productivity, and mental clarity, in addition to the physical impacts on metabolic health and sleep quality.
As the holiday season approaches, so do the festivities, sugar, and alcohol consumption. In this article, we explore some of the reasons why people are reducing or eliminating alcohol, its impact on our health, and how Sober October and Pure Sweat’s signature Sober Sauna Nights provide a social and healthful reset for the mind and body.
The Cultural Shift Toward Conscious Sobriety + Sober October
For decades, the standard for social gathering has been the bar or the cocktail party where alcohol serves as the primary social connector. However, a new generation of health-conscious individuals is challenging this norm by seeking out environments that support their physical goals rather than undermine them.
Conscious sobriety is now a growing trend to ensure bodies and minds are functioning at their highest potential. As we get older, the recovery rebound from alcohol also becomes harder. People are reluctant to sacrifice their next day’s productivity or their long-term health for a night of drinking. Instead, they are looking for experiences that leave them feeling refreshed, inspired, and connected.
Sober October provides a focused and supportive opportunity for people to evaluate their habits and intentionally reset. Many participants report improvements in sleep quality, mental clarity, and overall energy, as well as physical appearance.
This period of sobriety often serves as a catalyst for deeper and more permanent lifestyle changes as individuals realize that the social and emotional benefits they once associated with drinking can be achieved through other healthier and fulfilling means. By taking this month to reset, the body is allowed to return to its natural state of equilibrium, providing a clear baseline for future health decisions and personal growth.
The Biological Impact of Alcohol and the Role of Infrared Sauna to Detoxify
Ethanol is the chemical compound and toxin in all alcoholic beverages that causes intoxication. According to MD Anderson, when you drink alcohol, your body treats ethanol as a poison and prioritizes its metabolism above all other functions to eliminate ethanol as quickly as possible.
This process places a significant strain on the liver, induces inflammation, and disrupts the body’s ability to burn fat and regulate blood sugar effectively. Ethanol also acts as a central nervous system depressant and, in frequent doses, can damage cell DNA and acts as a carcinogen.
There is a growing body of scientific research highlighting the long-term risks associated with even moderate alcohol consumption. In his comprehensiveHuberman Lab Podcast episode on alcohol, Dr. Andrew Huberman breaks down the science of how ethanol affects the body and brain across cellular toxicity, sleep hygiene, gut microbiome, hormones and stress.
To counteract these effects, many people are turning to infrared sauna therapy, allowing for a deeper and more efficient detoxification process that is particularly beneficial at cleansing their systems after a period of indulgence or as part of a sober lifestyle.
The deep penetrating heat of an infrared sauna stimulates the circulatory system and increases blood flow to the skin and vital organs, which helps to mobilize toxins stored in the adipose tissue. This process is essential for flushing out the metabolic byproducts of alcohol and reducing the systemic inflammation that often follows.
In addition to the physical benefits of detoxification, infrared sauna therapy provides a unique opportunity for mental and emotional reset. The quiet warmth of the sauna provides a meditative space where individuals can calm and reconnect with themselves. The release of endorphins triggered by the heat also helps to naturally elevate mood and reduce stress, providing a healthy alternative to the temporary relaxation once sought through drinking.
Mental Health + Ongoing Recovery Support with Infrared Sauna, Float Therapy, and Cold Plunging
Consistent alcohol consumption is known to significantly disrupt brain chemistry, leading to increased anxiety and a decreased ability to manage stress over time. Infrared sauna, cold plunging, and float therapy support brain health, as well as build emotional resilience.
Research into the connection between thermal therapy and cognitive health suggests that regular sauna use can improve mood regulation and support the growth of new neurons in the brain through the release of heat-shock proteins.
This is particularly relevant for those in the early stages of sobriety as the brain works to recalibrate its neurotransmitter levels and recover from the neurotoxic effects of alcohol consumption.
Infrared sauna, cold plunging, and float therapy all provide meaningful ways to self-regulate emotions, calm anxiety, as well as create a natural high that is long lasting. As we become more in tune with our bodies and minds, we are better able to make choices that support our care, not harm.
Float therapy uniquely provides a nurturing experience that calms our nervous system, teaching us how to take pause, be present, and care for ourselves. Cold plunging teaches us how to empower ourselves through a challenging situation, building a muscle of resilience that supports us in life outside of the cold plunge. Both are also impactful in disrupting fixated, negative thoughts, resulting in mental freedom.
When you’re struggling with addiction, your brain becomes dependent on substances to generate dopamine and feel pleasure. Cold plunging naturally stimulates dopamine release, helping to restore your brain’s reward system and ability to experience a happy high without substances.
Simply put, substances can often by an automatic default to feel joy or escape from pain. Through consistent practices like infrared sauna, cold plunging, and float therapy, we are rewiring our brains, supporting emotional regulation, and building healthy habits that inhibit a trained reflex to self-medicate or mentally check out when life gets tough.

Sober Sauna Nights at Pure Sweat Studios
Since 2021, Pure Sweat has celebrated its annual Sober Sauna Nights in October, a night each week when we intentionally take a break from alcohol and enjoy a fun, wellness night at the studio, in community.
The genesis of Sober Sauna Nights began in Nashville, a town known for its vibrant nightlife, music and bar scene. Our Founder, Candice Bruder - who does not drink alcohol - observed how many downtown clients were coming into the studio to nurse hangovers after a night out on the town. She thought it would be a fun alternative to create an intentional, vibey night at the studio with mocktails and music. Et voila - Sober Sauna Nights was born.
For those in recovery or taking a sober break, finding social activities that do not involve alcohol can often be challenging or daunting. At Pure Sweat, we provide a safe, welcoming, and supportive environment to rest, recover, and be well. Our greatest joy is to celebrate your individual path to more harmony and well-being - and that is a goal worth toasting to.
Contact your local Pure Sweat studio to join us for Sober Sauna Nights.
Cheers to health!
